Rolando Romero-Anthony Yigit Finalized For July 17 Charlo-Castano Bill

Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero has a new opponent for his next ring adventure.

BoxingScene.com has learned that Sweden’s Anthony Yigit has officially agreed to step in to face Las Vegas’ Romero. The bout will serve as the chief support of a July 17 Showtime tripleheader, with the undisputed junior middleweight championship between Jermell Charlo (34-1, 18KOs) and Brian Castaño (17-0-1, 12KOs) headlining the show at AT&T Center in San Antonio.

Yigit (24-1-1, 8KOs) replaces Austin Dulay, who was forced to withdraw from the bout Wednesday evening due to a knee injury suffered during training camp.

The bout will take place at the 135-pound lightweight limit, with Romero’s WBA interim title at stake. It was previously unknown whether Yigit could get down to the weight or if the two would meet above the divisional limit in a non-title bout, although such details have seen been sorted out to move forward with the fight.

Yigit was already assigned on the undercard, though primarily in the role of a replacement opponent in the event of a fallout which is precisely what took place. The 29-year-old southpaw has won his last three starts since suffering a gruesome seventh-round stoppage loss to Ivan Baranchyk in their October 2018 junior welterweight title fight. His last fight, however, took place in June 2019 and he has never fought below junior welterweight.

Romero (13-0, 11KOs) will make the first defense of the interim title he claimed in a disputed twelve-round, unanimous decision victory over Jackson Mariñez last August on Showtime from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

The same site and network hosted his most recent start, a seventh-round stoppage of Avery Sparrow this past January. The bout took place above the lightweight limit, with Sparrow accepting the assignment on barely 30 hours’ notice in place of Justin Pauldo who badly missed weight for the scheduled title fight.

In the main event, Charlo and Castaño collide in an effort to crown the first-ever undisputed junior middleweight champion in the four-belt era. Opening the telecast, Uruguay’s Amilcar Vidal (12-0, 11KOs) collides with Virgina-based Immanuel Aleem (18-2-2, 11KOs) in a middleweight crossroads bout.
