Despite a first MotoGP podium in 2022, Johann Zarco’s performance in the Indonesian Grand Prix could have gone even better.

The Pramac Ducati rider, who began third on the grid, had a slow start, losing positions to Alex Rins, Jack Miller, and eventual Mandalika MotoGP winner Miguel Oliveira.

During the early parts of the race, it appeared that Zarco was biding his time before making a move forward, but that was not the case.

During the early parts of the race, it appeared that Zarco was biding his time before making a move forward, but that was not the case.

While Zarco’s speed was excellent, and he was the fastest rider on the track on several occasions, it was a lack of confidence in the early laps and an inability to make overtakes stick that denied the Frenchman a chance at his maiden MotoGP victory.

Zarco, who excels in wet conditions, found his stride as the race progressed, and after passing Suzuki rider Alex Rins for fourth, the former two-time Moto2 champion hauled in teammate Ducati rider Miller in just two laps.

Zarco was ‘glad’ to secure his first podium of the season, but he thought a chance had passed him by because to his speed: “Happy for the podium, but I expected a bit more.” The water level was high at the start of the race, and I took far too long to gain confidence.

“At that moment I thought I could go really fast and maybe catch Miguel or save second place before Fabio overtook me. But I was losing a bit too much on the drive and was spinning on corner exit.

“Even if I was strong on the brakes, it was not a good balance to overtake the others quickly. I tried to do my best, but when Fabio overtook me I saw that I was totally losing the podium.”

“I pushed the last two laps to try and catch Fabio but he was also feeling really good. Two laps were not enough.” Zarco Added.
